Adoption Requirements

Horses will be placed in the home most suitable for each individual horse. Horses are seeking permanent adoptive homes and may not be sold, given away or used for breeding. HPAF retains ownership rights to the adopted horses. In the event that the placement does not work out for any reason, the adopted horse must be returned to HPAF.

Adoptive home requirements:

  • Private home, no boarding facilities
  • A permanent home where the horse can live for the remainder of their life
  • Must have grass pasture, where horses will be turned out in a natural environment
  • Stalled only for inclement weather or free choice shelter
  • Preference will be given to homes with 10 or more acres of turnout area
  • Horse appropriate fencing; board or no climb is required
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age

Adoptive homes must have sufficient turnout with grass pasture, horse safe fencing and shelter. Adoption to private homes is preferred as is a natural environment with other horses. All HPAF horses are barefoot and it is great when they can stay barefoot. These horses are suitable for one rider only, not for multiple riders. It is necessary to establish a bond, trust and partnership with your adopted horse.

For the rideable horse, preference will be given to homes practicing Natural Horsemanship or dressage. Out of state adoptions are to natural horsemanship, holistic, dressage/Centered Riding or companion homes only.

All un-started, untrained, and green horses require an experience horse person with a background of training horses and who has a training plan for the horse's education.
